Breeding of Adapted Bulbous Flower Cultivars

The project of breeding goals in 2026 for amaryllis, calla lily and caladium have completed including 70 calla lily hybrid combinations, and 128 caladium hybrid combinations. A total of 198 combinations have been crossed and sowing and embryo culture work.

For the amaryllis section, 25 new lines and commercial cultivars were selected to participate in the 2026 Taiwan Amaryllis New Strains and Commercial Cultivars Competition on April 9, 2026 (Fig 1). Taiwan Seed Improvement and Propagation Station (TSIPS) achieved outstanding results, winning 1st, 3rd place, and 2 Excellence Awards in Group A (Small Flower Group); 2nd, 3rd place, and 4 Excellence Awards in Group B (Large Flower Group); as well as 1st through 3rd places and 5 Excellence Awards in Group C (Commercial Cultivation Award). Among these, 2 new amaryllis lines possess high market value, and the feasibility of their commercial promotion will continue to be evaluated. Additionally, amaryllis cultivar 'TSS No. 5-Summer Love' (Fig 2) was successfully transferred via non-exclusive licensing to Luv Seed Co., Ltd. on January, 2026. For calla lilies, 14 new commercial cultivars underwent leaf cell membrane thermostability tests to evaluate their heat tolerance potential. Regarding caladium, 'TSS No. 5 – Morning Mist Glimmer' (Fig 3)was granted plant variety rights on March 18, 2026, under Variety Right No. A03418.
