Exchange and Cooperation on Propagation, Breeding Technology and Plant Variety Protection of Ornamental Bulbs and Medicinal Plants between Taiwan and South Africa

It has been finished of study on 2023 exchanging of germplasm and propagation, breeding technology cooperation of medicinal plants and bulbous flowers by the fourth video conference of the joint working committee for co-operation in agriculture between South Africa and Taiwan. The main agricultural administration unit in South Africa is Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Republic of South Africa (DALRRD), the competent authority for executing plant variety rights system is Agriculture Production Health & Food Safety, Natural Resources & Disaster Management (AFND), Plant Genetic Resources Office (Genetic Resources) under Plant Production & Health, It is revised the law in 2018 (The Plant Breeders' Rights Act , Act No. 12 of 2018) by South Africa side, UPOV currently announces 339 applicable plant and South Africa side announces 469 applicable plant in plant variety rights, mainly medicinal bulbs and flowers. South Africa side currently has 3637 application cases since its legislation. Fruit tree cases account for up to 40%, and 95% of the total fruit tree cases are approved based on certification reports from UPOV member countries. In order to promote cooperation and exchange of medicinal and bulb flower genetic resources, propagation and breeding techniques and experiences between Taiwan aides and South Africa sides, technical staff of Taiwan visited the South African Agricultural Research Council (ARC), and South Africa sides agreed to assist Taiwan in the genetic development of emerging bulb flowers. Through the exchange of resources and information, Taiwan side will assist South Africa sides in conducting follow-up propagation technology exchanges and consultations on major endangered medicinal plants.
