TSIPS Expands the Domestic Grains Seed Production to Ensure the Food Security
The international food shortage became critical because of global geopolitical conflicts and the Covid-19 epidemic. In order to ensure the safe supply of domestic bulk grains, Taiwan Seed Improvement and Propagation Station (TSIPS) takes charges on the policy task of supplying 50,000 hectares seed needed for feed corn and contract farming sorghum seed in 2022 to meet the planting needs of domestic farmers, therefore, the production area of grain seeds has been expanded.
TSIPS said that domestic feed corn and sorghum are favored by animal husbandry and winemaking industries because of fresh, high-quality and versatile. Since the annual domestic supply of 20,000 hectares of feed corn and forage corn and 2,000 hectares of sorghum cannot meet all requirements, there still need to be imported a large quantities from abroad. Therefore, considering the current international situation, it is necessary to increase the domestic planting area and food self-sufficiency rate to reduce the risk of food supply.
TSIPS pointed out that annual domestic demand for feed corn and sorghum seeds are 400,000 kilograms and 20,000 kilograms in present, and the demand is expected to increase as the expanding planting area. Because of the high environmental, climate and technical requirements for seed production, it is not easy to find cooperative production partners in Taiwan. In order to promote the policy, the TSIPS has already sowed the feed corn "Tainong No. 8" and the brewed sorghum "Tainan No. 8" in mid-September this year, and continued the cultivation to ensure domestic planting requirement and meet the food supply.
TSIPS said that the feed corn 'Tainong No. 7'is the main variety of TSIPS, the silage corn 'Tainong No. 8' and the brewed sorghum 'Taichung No. 5', 'Tainan No. 8' are new domestic varieties with high production and were passed many tests and evaluations, and have promotion potential.
